I made this cake for a very sweet neighbor who's husband is a huge Xbox 360 fan. I tried to make this one look realistic and I think I pulled it off. I took a few pictures along the way that I thought I'd share. Enjoy!
First I made a pattern by tracing around a real Xbox.

Because of the Xbox's concave shape, I had some carving to do.Next, I gave it a thin layer of buttercream while trying to keep the edges sharp.
Here I used a mini paint brush to guide the little dots into place. A dab of water helps as "glue". This is a very tedious step, but worth it in the end.

Here's the bottom of the Xbox. I cut my fondant into a strip and used an exacto knife to cut it down to the right shape.

For the front details I used my pizza cutter and knife to cut out the different shapes and glued them down with water. A circle cutter was used to create the power button.

ReplyDeleteWhat type of cake did you bake for this?
DeleteI love to see people actually take the time to make things look realistic. I used to work at a bakery where the owner pretty much tried to do all the cakes as fast as she could, without putting any effort into making sure it looked good.
ReplyDeleteI love this! Even my boyfriend whose eyes glaze over when i start showing him cake pics thought this was amazing! Really cool X
ReplyDeletethis cake looks exactly like a xbox great job!!!1
ReplyDeleteWow excellent idea and job!
ReplyDeleteomg thats well good mate .. well done .. all you other people who commented its not just good! IS WELL WELL GOOD ... love it x
ReplyDeleteWhat size cake pan did you use? I wanna try to make one my self. Also where can i find fondant to buy or make it ?

ReplyDeleteThe cake pan was a 10 x 15. I bought it at a local cake shop, but I bet globalsugarart.com would have it.
ReplyDeleteThis cake is AMAZING! My husband couldn't believe it was an actual cake! Beautiful job!!!
ReplyDeletehow did you achieve the gray color??
ReplyDeleteThe gray color is achieved by adding a little dab of black color gel to white fondant.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! Well done! I'm going to do this cake for my boyfriends 30th. Any suggestions for the controllers?
ReplyDeleteThanks
That's an awesome cake! Was it rolled fondant?
ReplyDeleteFor a controller, I would probably make it out of rice crispy treats or modeling chocolate and then cover in fontant.
ReplyDeleteWeddingAndPartyNetwork - Yes, it was rolled fondant - Satin Ice or Pettinice.
genius idea for the controller, thanks so much. I'll let you know how it turns out :)
ReplyDeleteHow do you make fondant?? I am going to make an x-box cake for a close friend of mine. please e-mail me back. td_846@hotmail.com
ReplyDelete-Taylor
how did you get the letters so perfect????
ReplyDeleteTaylor - I buy premade fondant through globalsugarart.com. Dont buy the wilton brand fondnat. Its terrible!
ReplyDeleteFor the letters, I just did it freehand.
This is perfect!!! could you please help me with the actual cake, I am planning to make this disign for my nephew next week but I do not know wich cake should I bake since not everycake is good for carving. Please help me with this
ReplyDeleteThank you, tutty_cs@hotmail.com
I love your cake!! I want to make my brother one of these cakes could you help me with this I cant affort a $300 cake so I would need to make it myself and I have very limited experience. Please email me with any tips soccerlilly03@sbcglobal.net Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCristina - you can use any type of scratch poundcake recipe, or one that starts with a mix like White Almond Sour Cream.
ReplyDeleteomg!! thats amazing! i work at gamestop and i am making an xbox 360 cake for the modern warfare 2 release :) i saw other xbox cakes but yours just blows them away i went to school for culinary so i hope i can come some what close to yours! did u make the fondant or buy it already made?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting how to make the Xbox cake. I have been trying to do it just using decorator tips and it never comes out looking very good. Also I want to trying and make the controller for the xbox...any tips? please send them to ms.marystahl@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cake, I want to make my husband one this weekend for his birthday, HUGE xbox 360 gamer! I would also like to know how to make the controller and how did you get the silver on the cake i heard of one way which is to make the fondant gray and then use silver dust over it to make it silver, do you know of any other ways? please email me at zion_18@msn.com.
ReplyDeleteSorry its me again I hope you dont mind me asking but what recipe do you use for your cakes, I just use the cake mix from boxes but its hard to mold them in the shape i want cause it always breaks. Please reply to zion_18@msn.com. Thanks a bunch!!!
ReplyDeletePriscilla, I did not make a controller to go with this but would have made it out of rice crispy treats or modeling chocolate. The silver parts were airbrushed. If you like cake mixes you should use the WASC (white almond sour cream) recipe. It will come up in a google search. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteMy husband wants me to buy him an xbox 360 so bad for his birthday, but it is not in the budget. I googled "xblox 360 cake" to see if there were any ideas out there and yours was the first to pop up. I am absolutely amazed! I don't think there is any way I could actually make this for my husband. I wish you were local and I could hire you to do it for me (it would be cheaper than buying the actual xbox 360 haha).
ReplyDeleteHi, i have been making cakes for a while now and i really want to give the xbox 360 a go but i havent got the 360 to trace around, have you got and ideas , many thanks
ReplyDeletesarah x
Hello, you said to feel free to contact you, and I hope you meant it!
ReplyDeleteHow did you make the lettering? Its so tiny!
Contact me at sgal222@uky.edu
Sarah - I do not have a pattern for the xbox cake. I havent figured out how to upload one on to blogger. Sorry! Hopefully I'll get it figured out one of these days.
ReplyDeleteShekinah - The lettering was piped freehand.
Thanks so much for the tutorial! It really helped. I had fun making mine!!
ReplyDeleteHow did you get the neon green fondant? also- what is this achivement unlocked stuff? i saw that on other xbox cakes? when i looked at a pic of an actual xbox 360 i didnt see that so im confused lol?
ReplyDeleteErin - I bought the electric green food coloring gel from www.globalsugarart.com
ReplyDeleteWhen you play an xbox game and reach reach a goal you get an 'Achievement'. You get a little message at the bottom of your screen that says 'Achievement unlocked.... " My husband says "its a big deal". I had no idea what it was either. Good luck! :)
Wow, what an amazing cake! I wanted to make a cake like this for my boyfriends 19th birthday...what type of cake did you use? I've been making a lot of fondant cakes, and yet to have found one that acutaly works really well & wont fall apart on me or look crappy lol!
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing cake, you are sooo talented! I wanted to make an xbox cake for my boyfriend for his birthday & I was just wondering what type of cake you used? I've made a few fondant cakes, and still have not found a cake recipe that works! It always falls apart and ends up being a disaster. But my boyfriend asked for a cake for his birthday & I really want it to turn out good!
ReplyDeleteJuCake - you should use a pound cake recipe or the White Almond Sour Cream (WASC) found on RecipeZaar. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteWell I absolutely stink at baking (you'd have to use a straw to eat any cake i bake) can you just make one for me? and if so how much would it cost?
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing!! I've now got 8 days of tracking down the relevant ingredients, baking and icing etc in time for my son's 11th birthday. I'm just hoping it turns out half as good as yours!
ReplyDeletePS In case of disaster - do you ship to England? HA HA
I am making this cake today for my Husbands b-day! Wish me luck :)!!!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!! It's actually very easy to make!
ReplyDeleteDo you still put white icing where the grey is at the sides?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - You can put white fondant under the grey fondant.
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteYour artwork is flawless! I am making an xbox cake tomorrow and was wondering how you moved the cake to the base? It looks like you decorated it all on parchment paper first. I'd like to cover my base with black before I lay the cake but am worried it will break when I transfer it.
I used a flexible cutting board and just scooted it onto my board. If I were to do it again today I would use a piece of cardboard underneath it.
ReplyDeleteI never seem to have any luck with dying fondant grey. I've used white and added black dye (wilton) and always seem to get a purpleish colour. Tonight I used black fondant and added small pieces of white to it and ended up with a dark green. any tips you can give to get that beautiful grey colour? what a hassle!!
ReplyDeleteI always use Americolor gels. maybe that's the problem? I just use a tiny dab of black gel into the white fondant and it turns out grey for me. That's the only thing I can think of. I try to stay away from the Wilton stuff. Hope this helps. :)
ReplyDeleteNo matter what I do my fondant will ALWAYS crack and rip when I place it onto my cake. I'm making this cake for a bithday on sunday and everyones counting on me to have it there, it NEEDS to be perfect! I've tried everything, including turning the heat waaaaaay down so its freezing in here becuase i read somewhere that if its too warm the fondant will crack. any other tips for not making the fondact crack? please, I'm desperate!
ReplyDeletethank you!
awesome cake by the way, hope mine looks just as good!
What type of fondant are you using? Sometimes my pettinice will crack around the edges. I also think that dry fondant will crack more. Always keep it covered well.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the pound cake recipe, i allways make my cakes using victoria sponge recipe. Would this work for this cake? Elaine
ReplyDeleteHey, I was just wondering how long it took you to make this. And how do you put the fondant so it doesn't wrinkle or crack, can you fix the cracks?
ReplyDeleteI want to make it for my brother for his birthday and I'm really busy so I'm trying to find time to make this!
It looks awesome btw!! :)
what kind of fondant did you use?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - Here is a good recipe for carving- http://cakecentral.com/recipes/1953/Super-Enhanced-Cake-Formula
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - Thanks for the nice comment. It took around 4 or 5 hours to make. I lose track of time so this is a total guess. You have to get the fondant on quickly or it will start to dry out and crack.
Anonymous - I use pettinice or satin ice.
This helps so much.
ReplyDeleteI'm making a cake for my boyfriend for his birthday. He plays Xbox a lot so I thought it would be fun to make a cake shaped like it.
Do you have any tips for working with fondant for the first time?
HI, I love this cake! My husband loves his xbox and I would like to give it a try..the only thing is did you buy gray fondant or you mix the white fondant with black to create that gray color? I cant figure it out and I havent found gray fondant for sale?
ReplyDeleteYes, I mixed white fondant with a little dab of americolor black food color paste. Good luck!
ReplyDeletei made this cake b4 I saw your blog, but I think it turned out ok
ReplyDeleteCarly, I couldnt get the link to work. Try again. I'd love to see. :)
ReplyDeletemaybe this link will work? http://s916.photobucket.com/albums/ad6/carlyscakes/?action=view¤t=Picture584.jpg&newest=1
ReplyDeleteThat is really awesome Carly! I love how you added the video game too. I'll have to borrow that idea. :) Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat is a fantastic cake well done. It is also just the kind of info and help I was looking for to make my bf an xbox cake...its sometimes hard to tell if im his other half or his xbox is! Good work and thank you!
ReplyDeleteHey! How much fondant do you think you used to cover the whole cake?
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since I made this but I would buy at least 5 lbs. Better to have too much than run out in the middle of decorating.
ReplyDeleteHello all!
ReplyDeleteMy husband birthday is next month and I, albeit a beginner, would like to make a cake for him. I had thought of doing an XBox 360 cake but have no idea where to get the pan for it.
Any ideas? I'd like to do this soon so I can get a practice run in.
Thanks!
How would you go about making the controller?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - There is no xbox 360 pan that I know of. The only way I know how to do it is in the above tutorial. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I would make the controller out of modeling chocolate or rice crispy treats covered in fondant.
Can you tell me..what size cake pan did you use for your sheet cakes? I'm trying to find baking a cake from scratch and the recipe I came across is for a 9x9 pan and that seems too small since the cake would need to be rectangular not square. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteFor this cake I used a a 10 x 15 cake pan. I bought it at a local cake shop.
ReplyDeleteHow much food coloring did you happen to use?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I just add tiny little dabs of food coloring paste at until I have reached the desired color.
ReplyDeleteIt's the best xbox cake I've seen on the web, I've been searching ideas for my son's 13th. May I ask, how you got the "xbox 360" letter imprint on the grey/silver part of the cake. Well done!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: Thanks! I think I just did the letters freehand with royal icing. I'm forgetting now. :)
ReplyDeleteNow I definitely know what I'm making for my boyfriend's birthday! Thanks for the great tutorial.
ReplyDeleteMe, my sister and my best friend are going to attempt this in black tonight for my husbands birthday tomorrow. Wish us luck! By the way...you did an amazing job!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like so much fun! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHow big does the original cake have to be?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I baked the cake in a 10x15 inch cake pan. I think that's what you're asking? Good luck! :)
ReplyDeleteHi! What a lovely cake :) my husband is a great Xbox fan and your photos and tutorial has inspired me to make this cake for his birthday. Could you please tell me how much white fondant you needed to cover the cake?
ReplyDeleteAlso, you mentioned that you used a 10 x15 pan. How tall was the cake?
Do you think I could make a slightly smaller cake, and if so, what size pan would you recommend?
Thanks very much!
Anonymous, I'm so glad I inspired you! I'm guessing I used around 5 lbs of fondant. The 10 x 15 pan is 2" tall. You can definitely make a smaller one by using any type of rectangle cake pan. Have fun making your cake!
ReplyDeleteI was looking everywhere for a way to make this cake for my boyfriend. Thank you so much for the step by step instructions, I hope mine looks this good when its finished!
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome!! I'm going to try to make this for my boyfriend for his 30th birthday in October...I can't wait! Hopefully mine will come out as good as yours did! I've never decorated a cake before, but I've watched a ton of Amazing Wedding Cake episodes haha
ReplyDeletebest cake ever!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe cake is brillant, What ingrediants would I need? Is the grey Icing?
ReplyDeleteThat is ridiculously awesome. The kicker is the achievement you added at the bottom. Glorious!
ReplyDeleteI am making this cake next week for my boyfriends birthday but not sure how to make fondant icing?! Can i use ready to roll icing? Also my tin is more square and would it be a good idea to slice it in haf( like a victoria sandwich if so what did u use for ur filling in urxbox 360 cake?
ReplyDeletejust would like to know the ingredients and whatyou do on how to make your spondge to be able how to carve it in to shape my spondge seems to soft to do that. need you help
ReplyDeleteThank you for the nice comments! And sorry for my delayed response.
ReplyDeleteJo - the gray is icing. It's just white fondant with a little dab of black americolor gel color.
Anynymous, I buy my fondant icing. Satin Ice or pettinice. I always fill my cakes with swiss meringue. I hope your cake turned out great!
Rob, use a pound cake recipe or the White Almond Sour Cream (WASC) found on RecipeZaar. Good Luck!
This is ace!
ReplyDeleteWhat size cake tin did you have to use for this?
Thanks! The cake pan was a 10 x 15. I bought it at a local cake shop.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know what an XBOX 360 is and my son suggested a cake like one for my grandson's 9th bd. He just found this on the computer and sent to me MAYBE I'll get brave enough. Thanks for such exact instructions
ReplyDeleteAwesome cake!!! Do you fill and frost the cake with swiss meringue?
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute grandson you have! You have to make him one. :)
ReplyDeleteI've forgotten what I used for filling and frosting then... it's been a while. If i were to redo it today I would use swiss merigue to frost and fill. good luck!
Is it better to make my own fondant?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I prefer to buy premade fondant. It saves SO much time and the consistency is much better than homemade.
ReplyDeleteI saw your XBox 360 cake, my boyfriends sons has one, I have never tried making a cake with fondant, but had made hunting things like bow, rifle, deer head out of fondant and put on cupcakes. Wanted to make one for his 18th birthday. I don't like pound cake, and heard that regular cake would not work, but I went for it, baked 2 13x9 cakes, Duncan Hines White cake mix, iced in between with icing made with conf. sugar and crisco (not buttercream). put in refrig. for a day, my boyfriend carved it and carved really good and I covered with alot of icing then with fondant and tried to make it look just like yours. wished it would have, had some mistakes, my boyfriend made a figure of his son and holding guitar out of fondant. He loved it, didn't want to cut it. So thank you so much for talking thru how you did it. We are planning to do a cell phone for his daughter's 21st birthday in December. Plus we all are trying fondant decorating on cupcakes for halloween and Thanksgiven.
ReplyDeleteHi Teresa,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I could help you through your boyfriends son's cake!! Fondant is so much fun to work with. Thanks for the wonderful comment.
hi there, I am a complete novice to decorating cakes but my boyfriend has told his friend I could make one like this for his son, can I ask how long would it last (how many days before could I make it) as he needs it for the day after christmas, also how do you get it so thetre are no joins in the fondant, any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
ReplyDeletethis is so awesome!! it looks so realistic. my boyfriend's birthday is coming up and i'd love to make it for him. i know you mentioned carving the xbox for the concave shape, but how did you get it to maintain that curve on the bottom when it was laying down? did it not just fall down on itself? or was there something to support it?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I usually bake the cake a couple days before delivery. Also, I just roll the fondant out in one piece and then cover.
ReplyDeleteDavana, I did not use any supports just a firm cake recipe. A regular cake mix will not work for this. Try using a pound cake recipe. Good luck!
My husband is a die hard chocolate guy. I saw that you reccomend using a pound cake, is there any type of chocolate cake you would reccomend? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica, I dont really have a good chocolate cake recipe that is good for carving. The one i use so sticky that I hate using it for 3D cakes. Sorry!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/photo.php?fbid=497058352154&set=a.497058047154.269216.606692154 ... I made a cake this weekend for my boyfriend. I followed your instructions! Came out perfect
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on making this for my boyfried for our anniversary. What would you suggest putting for the 'achievment unlocked' part?
ReplyDeletedo you take cake orders:)
ReplyDeleteAlli - I couldnt get the link to work. I want to see!!!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous- You can put anything really. Maybe the number of years together or something?
Anonymous - Yes, I take orders. Email me - stephanie@cakefixation.com
Love the cake!! did you stack it as 2 cakes with a filling in between to make the height? Or should I bake just one cake and cover that? Also wondering when you put the white fondant over the cake you said you did it in one piece? Did the one piece cover the sides as well? Im not so great with fondant, do you think I could cover the whole cake just not the sides and then cut the grey to fit into it? LOVEEE YOUR CAKE!!
ReplyDeleteThis is really nice, very well done, thank you for posting and for explaining all the details. I'm thinking about making one for my son's birthday, hope it goes as nice as yours! :) I'll contact you if I have any doubts.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
This is really nice, very well done, thank you for posting and for explaining all the details. I'm thinking about making one for my son's birthday, hope it goes as nice as yours! :) I'll contact you if I have any doubts.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
I am trying to make the xbox360 cake for my new step-son. He's been through a lot and I want to make his first birthday with us special. I was going to order the fondant off of the website you suggested but I have no clue how much! This is my first fondant cake so I'm a bit clueless. LOL! Please email me at recorbride@gmail.com Thanks so much!!!
ReplyDeleteis this a single layer cake split in the middle and filled or is it a 2 layer cake filled between the layers? trying to get the height on it right?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
is fondant the same as role out icing ?
ReplyDeleteCarly, I think it was one cake split in the middle. It's been so long since I made this that I cannot remember now. I made another one recently and I used 3 layers of cake and 2 layers of filling.
ReplyDeleteYes, fondnat is the same as roll out icing.
I'm going to try to make this cake for my sons 10th birthday in 8 days and I was wondering if you have ever used rolled buttercream before to cover cakes and if so what do you think of it? I've used fondant but I prefer the taste of buttercream myself.
ReplyDeleteI've never used rolled buttercream so I cant help you there. I normally use Satin Ice Fondant or FondX Brand. Good luck!!
ReplyDeletehi I love your cake - I'm going to attempt one for my husbands b-day this week. I just want to say I think it's really cool that you are still replying to the comments after all this time x
ReplyDeleteThanks Elaine! I'm so happy that I can help people make their own cake. Have fun making yours!
ReplyDeleteI want to make this for my brothers 21st. birthday. Do you think it would be harder to make with just frosting? I can detail pretty well but am worried about all the really small parts. Would it work if I used frosting and fondant?
ReplyDeletehi would i be able to make this cake filled and frosted a few days before hand then freeze?? if so how long can it be frozen for? so i can decorate with fondant on the day? paige.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS CAKE, WELL DONE! You have inspired me to have a go and make this for my sons 16th Birthday. I'm a complete novice, but will take on your instrution and advise and have a go, I'll let you know how I got on. Thanks for your input. Carol.
ReplyDeleteHiiiii! I specifically looked for an XBOX cake on google and found this. Im hoping to have one baked for my boyfriend's bday. Can i order one through you? Please contact me at 09053236835.
ReplyDeletei want one 4 my bday pls make 1
ReplyDeleteHello, I love this cake. im going to try making it for my brothers 15 birthday. how much cake mix do you need for a 10x15 cake pan? and what cake recipe would work best for this? thank you so much! you can email me at supergirl91690@yahoo.com if thats easier.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try and make this.for.my boyfriends 20th b day but iv never tried to.make a fancy cake. Can u email me and tell me wat kind of cake you used and how to use fondant? My email is cherry_bonbons@Yahoo.com. thank you
ReplyDeletefor the cake recipe do you have to double the recipe for a 10x15 cake pan?
ReplyDeletehow do u do for the letters to pop out and also for the green xbox power button help me pleaseee
ReplyDeleteThe green is fluorescent green by americolor. The letters on the top were done freehand with royal icing, however, you could use this technique to help you: http://cakefixation.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-transfer-image-to-fondant.html
DeleteI would love to make this for my son. However, instead of using a thin layer of buttercream before the fondant, could I use a different recipe frosting? Let's say mint chocolate frosting or just homemade whipped cream? Then lay the fondant over. I am trying to get a good combination of taste plus design.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
I love this!! so talented! Im looking at making this for my partners birthday at the weekend..however not sure what size tin i should be using? and im finding it difficult to find a sponge recipe that would work for the right size, if that makes sence! Your help would be appreciated!!
ReplyDelete
